NSF EPSCoR Airborne LiDAR Data Processing Workshop in Boise, Idaho

BCAL organized LiDAR processing workshops in Pocatello, ID and Sydney, Australia

Idaho State University, Boise Center of Aerospace Laboratory (BCAL) organized workshops on LiDAR processing during Intermountain GIS Conference in Pocatello, ID (March, 2011) and International Symposium for Remote Sensing of the Environment in Sydney, Australia (April, 2011). A similar workshop was previously organized in August, 2010 during NSF EPSCoR Annual Meeting in Boise, ID. A significant part of the workshop was focused on processing LiDAR data to create derived products useful for watershed modeling. About 50 participants, ranging from graduate students to researchers working in watershed modeling and related sciences, benefited from the workshop.

New LiDAR Acquisition by FEMA

LiDAR Collection Areas

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region X will be collecting LiDAR data to map 875 square miles of Idaho floodplain from June 8-17, 2011.

June 8 – June 17, Aerometric, a contractor hired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region X, will be flying an aircraft-mounted Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) laser sensor to map 875 square miles of Idaho floodplain. This LiDAR data will be processed to make enhanced digital topographic maps. IDWR prefers to use LiDAR data for mapping Idaho floodplains because LiDAR is a floodplain mapping best practice for superb accuracy, resolution, precision, cost effectiveness and utility. The aircraft, LiDAR sensor and acquisition crew will be available for interviews, filming and pictures and to answer questions about this technology and its applications from June 8th – June 17th in various Idaho General Aviation Airports near the collection areas below. Call Ryan at IDWR to coordinate a meeting. The aircraft, in the Idaho Falls area June 8th, follows a weather dependant schedule.

LiDAR is a very powerful technology (http://bcal.geology.isu.edu/ for more info) used to understand many different public safety issues, such as: flooding, forest fire fuels modeling, landslides and has numerous other applications such as topographic contours, skyline analysis, digital elevation models, ground cover, et cetera. The LiDAR sensor is a laser and receiver that work together, shooting pulses of light at the surface of the earth from the moving aircraft and the recording information from the laser reflection. LiDAR is capable of producing maps so accurate that error is often measured in millimeters. Floodplain mapping uses approximately 4.223mm resolution and 8 pulse returns per meter, LiDAR quotes at this resolution typically average nearly $1,200.00 per square mile. The LiDAR is being acquired as part of the Idaho Risk Mapping, Assessment and Planning (Risk MAP) Program. The vision for Risk MAP is to deliver quality data that increases public awareness and leads to action that reduces risk to life and property (http://www.fema.gov/plan/prevent/fhm/rm_main.shtm). Local Idaho communities are the primary beneficiary of this 100% FEMA funded effort. The light emitted from the instrument will not hurt eyes.

LiDAR helps discover new fault

A highly detailed LiDAR topographic image helps ISU professor Glenn Thackray discover a previously unknown active earthquake fault in Idaho’s Sawtooth Range, about 65 miles from Boise.

While looking at a highly detailed new topographic image of Idaho’s Sawtooth Range, Idaho State University geosciences professor Glenn Thackray had an “eureka moment” when he discovered a previously unknown active earthquake fault about 65 miles, as the crow flies, from Boise. ISU researchers estimate the fault has been active twice in the last 10,000 years, about 4,100 and 7,000 years ago.

The researchers examined a Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) image. LIDAR is a remote sensing system used to collect topographic data with aircraft-mounted lasers capable of recording elevation measurements at a rate of 25,000 pulses per second and can have a vertical precision of about six inches. The images can be displayed so they don’t show an area’s vegetation. Four years ago while doing some research on glaciers in the Sawtooth Range, Thackray was examining a high-resolution, “bare-earth” LIDAR image of the mountains: this is when he noticed a line running through the image in the vicinity of Redfish Lake.

“The black line stood out and I thought that it had to be an earthquake fault,” Thackray said. “It was long suspected that there was an active fault in the Sawtooths, but without the LIDAR technology it would have been exceptionally hard to find.”

Since that time, ISU researchers have been on the ground documenting the fault that is at least 25 miles long and could be as long as 40 miles. It is located on the eastern edge of the range and comes within about five miles from the town of Stanley. A portion of it runs through the upper end of Redfish Lake. It runs along the range approximately from near Stanley Lake to at least as far south as Petitt Lake.

“The reason this discovery is so important is that it is within the heavily visited areas of the Sawtooth National Recreation area, very close to the town of Stanley, and within 65 miles of Idaho’s largest city, Boise, and the most populated area in the state,” Thackray said. “We would like to know how big the earthquakes are along this fault and how active it is.”

Thackray emphasized that the fault is cause for concern, but not alarm, for visitors to and residents of the Stanley-Sawtooth area, and to the residents of the Wood River or Boise valleys. The discovery may have implications for land-use and emergency planning, and perhaps building codes. Depending on the magnitude of a potential earthquake, it could do damage to surrounding areas.

There are few major, active faults in Idaho. Idaho’s three other major faults run along the base of the Lost River Range (where the famous Borah Peak magnitude 7.3 earthquake, the largest ever recorded in Idaho, occurred in 1983), the Lemhi Range and the Beaverhead Range. Faults are break in the earth’s crust, along which rocks and the earth move. Typically, the earth is moving up on one side of the fault, and moving down on the other.

“It’s the movement of the rocks that are important. That is what creates an earthquake hazard,” Thackray said.

After discovering the fault on the LIDAR image and then confirming its existence on the ground, ISU researchers had to determine whether it was an active fault, defined as a fault that has featured an earthquake within the last 10,000 years. Determining whether the fault was active was a challenge for the researchers because most of the fault is located within the Sawtooth Wilderness and Recreation Area.

“Normally, to test a fault you could take in a Cat or backhoe and dig up sediment and rock and use carbon dating to date the occurrence of previous activity,” Thackray said. “But we couldn’t do that because the fault is in a wilderness area.”

This is where a little luck and scientific serendipity came into play. Other ISU researchers, biological sciences professor Bruce Finney, postdoctoral researcher Mark Shapley, and ISU geosciences graduate student Eric Johnson, were doing lake sediment core sampling of lakes in the Sawtooths, including Redfish Lake, to study the historical record of sockeye salmon returning to the area. While drilling through the sediment in the upper portion of Redfish Lake the researchers hit levels where there were landslide deposits interrupted the regular accumulation of sediment deposits.

“We were able to date the occurrence of the most recent fault activity by using those drilling samples from the large landslides in Redfish Lake,” Thackray said.

“There is a lot that we still don’t know about this fault, but our studies have revealed the outline of its history,” he added.

USGS’s 3DEP can potentially generate $6m annually in Idaho

Agriculture and precision farming, natural resources conservation, and infrastructure and construction management are the top three business uses of the 3D elevation data in Idaho, according to the National Enhanced Elevation Assessment report.

USGS’s 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) has released an elevation data factsheet for Idaho, which estimates potential annual benefits of at least $6 million from the 3DEP initiative in the state of Idaho.

3DEP is a nationwide initiative to improve coverage and accuracy of high-resolution elevation data. The program is expected to be operational by January 2015 and to have complete coverage of the United States by 2022, depending on funding and partnerships.

Mapping spider habitat with LiDAR

University of Idaho professors and a group of German scientists used LiDAR data to map spider habitat within the Bavarian Forest National Park in Germany.

University of Idaho professors Lee Vierling and Kerri Vierling collaborated with a team of German scientists to study ecosystems using remotely sensed laser data. The research team used LiDAR data collected from aircraft to create 3-D pictures of the different forest layers in Germany’s Bavarian Forest National Park. By combining LiDAR data with extensive field data about spiders and other information about an area’s vegetation, rainfall patterns and temperature, researchers can get a detailed picture about the habitat characteristics important to a healthy spider population.

“Spiders are the dominant invertebrate predator in many land-based ecosystems. Often, they are beneficial to humans by eating insects like mosquitoes and agricultural pests,” explains Lee Vierling. “An area’s spider species composition can be sensitive to vegetation structure, soil moisture and disturbance, and can indicate the overall level of ecosystem health. The laser data acts like an MRI of the forest, which allowed us to predict where a number of spider species live across that broad landscape.”

“LiDAR is an awesome technology that takes us away from little individual plots where we measured a few spiders,” said study co-author Lee Vierling, an University of Idaho ecologist who specializes in using remote sensing to study ecosystems. “It allows us to zoom out to the entire landscape.”

Spiders are the dominant invertebrate predator in many land-based ecosystems. Often, they are beneficial to humans by eating insects like mosquitoes and agricultural pests. An area’s spider species composition can be sensitive to things like vegetation structure, soil moisture and disturbance, which makes them good indicators of overall ecosystem health.

Usually, scientists must trek into the field to study the resident spider community. But these ground-based studies only give information about the limited areas scientists can reach on foot.

“In woodland, you are usually confined to the ground, which cramps your style given that most of the structure is way out of reach above your head,” wrote Shelley Hinsley, an ecologist with the Center for Ecology and Hydrology in the United Kingdom, who was not involved in the LiDAR mapping work.

By using LiDAR, not only can scientists cover more ground with an aerial survey; they can study habitats high up in the forest canopy. By combining LiDAR data with other information about an area’s vegetation, rainfall patterns and temperature, researchers can get a detailed picture about the habitat characteristics important to a healthy spider population.

In a study published in the March Ecological Applications, Vierling’s team used LiDAR to create 3-D pictures of the different forest layers, including the canopy and ground vegetation, in the Bavarian Forest National Park. They mapped the terrain, and measured how much sunlight certain areas got and where moisture accumulated.

From those measurements, they predicted what species of spiders ought to be present in different habitats. Then they checked the predictions with ground surveys, counting and measuring vegetation types and spider presence.

Even though the two techniques measured different aspects of the forest, Vierling and his colleagues found their LiDAR measurements were as reliable as a ground survey at predicting the presence of spiders and types of species present.

But there are limitations. While LiDAR could predict which spiders ought to be in a certain area, it wasn’t good at predicting how many individual spiders there were. A scientist would still have to go in on foot if they wanted to find that out.

However, “in this case, now we can make maps with a known amount of confidence that certain types of spiders would most likely be in certain parts of this national park,” said Vierling.

“This is a highly innovative study,” wrote Greg Asner, a researcher at the Carnegie Institution for Science at Stanford who wasn’t involved in the study. “I think it’s a great example of the power of 3-D remote sensing for ecological research.”
